# History of MPM Math

MPM Math originated from Taiwan as a top math enrichment program with the goal of developing independence, critical-thinking skills, and autonomy in children. Since its creation in 1987 by Roger Chang, the program has grown to incorporate school math curriculum from Canada, Signapore, Taiwan, and America. With over 1000 MPM Math centres around the world, MPM inspires children to learn math through new, creative methods instead of traditional ways.

MPM is the acronym for Multi-Process-Model. MPM is a well-sequenced math program designed around the concepts of Multi-Process (Depth of Thinking) and Multi-Model (Width of Thinking) Mathematics.

MPM believes that the primary step to learning math is to enjoy math. It has designed a Personalized System of Learning (PSL) math curriculum, which motivates students to develop their skills independently with deliberate minimal guidance by the Instructor.

The Curriculum of MPM

MPM Math is a program designed for Kindergarten to 6th grade students (ideal entry level is 5 to 8 years old). It is not a make-up or supplement but a complete learning system all by itself.

Stage I (K to 1) — for Enlightenment

At this stage, students are initially exposed to the four basic areas of math – numbers, quantities, shapes and space – through the cognition of 1 to 1 correspondence, similarities and dissimilarities, contrast and comparison, observation and patterns, hand-eye coordination, shapes and colors, spatial correspondence, etc.

Stage II (2 to 4) — for Conceptual Understandings

At this stage, students develop deeper conceptual understandings about addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, space, measurements, geometric shapes, fractions, decimals, etc.

Stage III (5 to 6) — for Application

At this stage, students are given ample opportunities to exercise and apply their abilities of observation, reasoning and creativity to the finding of quick and smart solutions of various math problems.

MPM’s Philosophy

Our persistence has always been to fully develop the potentials of students so that they can perform logical reasoning to solve problems independently.

In MPM classroom, each and every student is a key person.

Minimal Guidance

Students are encouraged to work independently. The instructor will provide necessary guidance only at the critical moments to the student in need. Everyone is well attended to, and no one is ever neglected.

Individual Pace

There is no need for students to accommodate each others’s pace in the classroom. Each student has an individualized pack of learning materials and working pace.

Well-Sequenced Materials

Every student should have the chance to discover the solutions on his/her own. The materials are organized into well-sequenced steps to maximize the possibility.
